Origin Green is Ireland’s pioneering food and drink sustainability programme.

Origin Green operates on a national scale, uniting government, the private sector, and the full supply chain from farmers to food producers and right through to the foodservice and retail sectors. The programme is the worlds’ only national food and drink sustainability programme and enables the industry to set and achieve measurable sustainability targets that respect the environment and serve local communities more effectively. DK Connemara Oysters has been a member of Origin Green since 2017 and we seek to continually improve the environmental performance of our business and see it as integral to the achievement of our key strategic objectives.

It is important to us that we respect the beautiful bay that we grow our oysters in and protect the biodiversity. We have regular checks for invasive species on the farm in particular Didemnum Vexillum we monitor their presence, quantity and if necessary, treat oyster bags with vinegar to stop them growing on the bags.

We are also reintroducing the native oysters on a pilot scale. Ballinakill bay was originally a native oyster farm up until the 70’s when a blight wiped out both the farmed and wild population.
